Thibo Smets's Passion for Karting

For Thibo, karting is much more than a hobby. It is his greatest passion, his daily motivation, and his dream for the future. He first experienced the thrill of speed at the age of five and knew instantly: this is what he wanted to do. That passion drives him to improve every day, both on and off the track.

Thibo lives for the sensation of acceleration, the battle for every corner, and the challenge of pushing his limits. But passion alone isn’t enough. It requires hours of training, physical preparation, discipline, and the right resources. Read on to discover how Thibo turns his passion into performance, and why he cannot do it without support.

Indoor Karting:
The Foundation of His Career

Thibo took his first steps in indoor karting at the age of five. He took various lessons to master the basics: the ideal racing line, braking points, and how to get a feel for the kart. He soon began competing in children’s races and secured several podium finishes. That taste of success left him wanting more.

His most remarkable indoor achievement took place in June 2026. During an endurance race lasting a full hour, Thibo competed against a field of adult drivers. Undeterred by the competition, the eight-year-old drove a strong, error-free race and ultimately claimed first place in the Silver class. This result proved that he is not only fast but also possesses the stamina and mental resilience to handle long races.

Outdoor Karting:
The Big Challenge

In February 2026, Thibo made the switch to outdoor karting. This was a huge step forward. The speeds are higher, the tracks are longer and more technical, and the competition is tougher. Outdoor racing demands a different approach: greater insight, better physical fitness, and the courage to take risks.

Just two months after making the switch, in April 2026, Thibo competed in his first official outdoor race at the iconic Genk circuit. He finished 15th out of 18 competitors, an impressive achievement for a debut, but above all, a valuable learning experience.

Thibo didn’t rest on his laurels. During his second outdoor race in Mariembourg (early July 2026), he staged an impressive recovery drive. Starting in a field of 17 drivers, he finished 8th. It was a fantastic top-10 finish that underscored his rapid development.

His third race took place in Genk again in late July 2026. Thibo kept fighting despite particularly difficult and changeable weather conditions—including rain and wind. Competing against a field of no fewer than 29 participants, he managed to secure an impressive 23rd place. This result demonstrated his resilience and his ability to adapt to tough conditions.

Why Sponsors Are Essential
for Thibo’s Passion

Passion alone doesn’t pay the bills. Outdoor karting at the level Thibo is currently racing at is an expensive undertaking. To keep competing and continue his development, a great deal is required:

  • Equipment: A competitive kart, spare parts, tires (often replaced multiple times per race weekend), and engines that require regular overhauls.

  • Entry fees and access: Participation in official races at circuits such as Genk and Mariembourg entails significant costs.

  • Travel and accommodation costs: Competitions take place both domestically and abroad. Travel, overnight stays, and logistics are essential.

  • Training and coaching: To keep growing, Thibo needs guidance from experienced coaches who prepare him technically and mentally for every race.

Without sponsor support, Thibo cannot put in enough training hours or participate in all the competitions needed to advance to higher levels. Sponsors make the difference between a fun hobby and a serious shot at a professional career.

FAQs

Why did Thibo switch from indoor to outdoor karting?

In February 2026, Thibo made the switch from indoor to outdoor karting because he was ready for a greater challenge. Outdoor racing means higher speeds, longer and more technical tracks, and a completely different racing approach. It was the logical next step in his development as a driver to prepare for car racing.

What are Thibo's best results in the outdoor class so far?

His best outdoor result to date is an 8th-place finish in his second race at Mariembourg (July 2026), out of a field of 17 competitors. In addition, he finished 23rd out of 29 drivers in Genk under very difficult weather conditions. His debut in Genk resulted in a 15th-place finish.

How does Thibo combine his passion for karting with school and free time?

Thibo does not view karting as something separate from his everyday life. He works hard at school and completes his assignments so that he can train with a clear conscience. He enjoys staying active in his free time; he runs regularly to maintain his fitness and organizes small cycling races with friends. He is learning that discipline and perseverance are just as important on the track as they are in the classroom.

Why does Thibo need sponsors for his karting career?

Karting at the level Thibo currently competes at is an expensive sport. Consider the costs of engines, tires, maintenance, fuel, race entry fees, travel and accommodation expenses, and professional coaching. Without sponsors, it is impossible for a young driver to log enough training hours and participate in all the races needed to advance. Sponsors make the dream affordable.

What makes Thibo's passion for racing unique compared to other boys his age?

Thibo’s passion goes beyond just driving. He has a tremendous drive to win, yet he knows he has to work hard for it. He trains not only on the track but also physically by running. He learns from every race, even when things don’t go his way, and looks beyond the present: he dreams of Formula 1 and is prepared to undertake the years-long journey to get there.
